Hello, and welcome to our blog! As this is our inaugural post, please allow us a few words of introduction. VC Ready Law Group was formed by two corporate attorneys who, like so many of the entrepreneurs we hope will become frequent readers of this blog, were casualties of the recent economic downturn. As is the case with many start-up companies, it was in the depths of our frustration that the idea for VC Ready Law Group was hatched one afternoon over lunch.
Our goal is to bring a fresh perspective to an industry that is famously slow to adapt. In our years working at large law firms, we honed the skills necessary to help businesses grow, but we also saw how the needs of emerging-company clients are often under-served. Large law firms are best situated to serve large clients, and while many large law firms have formed task forces, focus groups and “incubators” devoted to bringing in small company clients, large companies are still their bread and butter. Smaller clients often wait longer to have their calls returned, yet are billed at the same rate as firms with billions of dollars in revenue. After being wooed by a partner at the large firm, small clients will usually be handed off to an associate who will handle their day-to-day legal needs, but the high rate of associate turnover at large law firms these days means that many small company clients will cycle through a new associate once-a-year or more. None of this lends itself to the development of a good working relationship between client and lawyer.
We strive to be different. We chose to focus our practice on start-up technology companies for three reasons. First, it is where our passion lies. We are technophiles who love being knee deep in the latest industry developments, be they biotechnology, information technology or otherwise. Second, it is where our expertise lies. Each of us has spent countless hours assisting fledgling companies navigate legal hurdles before, during and after venture capital financing. Third, it is where the future lies. We genuinely hope that many of the companies we are able to serve will someday outgrow us so they can become the big clients of bigger firms. We’re just hoping for a front row seat as it happens.
So what do we do? We help Boston-area entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses by providing legal and organizational guidance during the formative early stages of a company’s existence. We draw upon our experience working with dozens of venture capitalists and start-up companies to advise our clients on how to avoid many of the pitfalls start-ups face on their path from formation to obtaining venture capital financing. We strive to provide exceptional legal service at prices even cash-strapped start-ups can afford.
